As they dig holes, Wirt questions - are they digging their own graves? They’re surprised when skeletons climb out of the ground, don pumpkins on their heads, \u0026amp; frolic away to join the party – turns out, it’s a village of the dead.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe song “Patient Is The Night” accompanies a montage of the group literally amongst the straw and stover (the barren stumps \u0026amp; stalks of field crops left over after a harvest). The lyrics touch on the slow meandering pace of meaningless labor (there is nothing left to harvest; the field is empty; life has been lived) while the worker longs for the end of the day when he will get to see his love (death’s release, represented by night \/ the moon). Death is painted as a comforting, patient, benevolent figure, “never late”, arriving when she is meant to.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe song speaks of one whose life no longer holds meaning, as their days have been spent, but who happily anticipates the new adventure that comes in death. Pretty fitting for the residents of Pottsfield – although dead, they rejoice in the changing of the seasons.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs a nod to the music of OTGW, which evokes old-timey American folk \u0026amp; jazz, I represented death as an old fashioned paper moon, one of the most popular props in cheap, early 20th-century photography at carnivals, offering people the chance to take a “trip to the heavens”.
