Over the Garden Wall is a story all about liminal spaces, particularly the permeable line between life and death.

The show opens with its protagonists, Wirt and Greg, hopelessly lost, wandering through shadowy woods, unaware of how they got there. After a Halloween scare, they'd clambered up a graveyard wall and jumped onto a set of train tracks on the other side. When an oncoming train startled them, they darted out of the way, rolling down a hill & into a lake, knocking them both unconscious...until they woke up in the Unknown, a strange place that seems to be stuck in the past. Now, they must find their way home.

Wirt is an anxious teen who struggles with unknown outcomes. Through his journey, he gains the self-confidence to take risks and better deal with the surprises of life, like his happy-go-lucky brother Greg does.

Later on, after Wirt loses hope that they will ever get home again, death begins to consume him. Greg prepares to sacrifice himself to save Wirt, and Wirt awakens to find Greg gone. As he frantically searches for him, Wirt falls into a dark, frozen lake and must battle a raging snowstorm. When he finally faces his fear of the Beast (and the unknown), the brothers are able to return home.

ITU features a base of foamy velvet icee “snow”. Top it with the layer of clear “water” and then the “frozen lake” (made of crackable dark blue wax), and toppings – skulls, iridescent shards, and snowflakes. Press through the layers to evoke the descent into The Unknown - the fall into the lake, the break into another realm, and the snowstorm one must wander through to make it out the other side.
