“Like Ships” is a duet between Wirt and Lorna in the episode “The Ringing of the Bell”, a moment where two lonely people briefly find connection & understanding in each other. Lorna is a quiet, unassuming girl who takes a liking to Greg & Wirt when they stumble upon her home seeking refuge. However, Lorna is trapped under the curse of an evil spirit and controlled by her Auntie Whispers (played by Tim Curry, RIP), who hypnotizes her by ringing a golden bell and busying her with endless chores so that she will not be tempted to be wicked. Although Lorna may dream of escape, she is held back by her devotion & sense of obligation to her aunt. When the curse is finally broken, she hesitates to leave home & join Wirt on his journey due to her own fear of the unknown.

Wirt, of course, is also trapped by his own self-doubt & anxiety, feeling like he doesn’t belong anywhere. Though their meeting is brief & fleeting, they share an understanding of what it is like to be stuck & lost, searching for a way out. Like ships upon a winding river, they cannot save each other; their paths cross for only a short time before they must continue in different directions. Yet, though some people are only in our lives for a brief time, the impact they have on us is something we can carry for a lifetime.
