My Chemical Romance’s 1st album, “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love” introduces the Demolition Lovers, a Bonnie-&-Clyde-type duo who go on a crime spree and meet their tragic end in a hail of bullets. Their story is expanded in the band’s 2nd album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, which loosely tells the story of “a man, a woman, & the corpses of a thousand evil men…” In it, the man is offered a deal with the devil: harvest 1000 evil souls & he will be reunited with his beloved. The album follows his bloody journey but ends with a twist when he realizes he can never see his love again…because the last evil soul he must rid the world of is himself.
“Stand up fucking tall, don't let them see your back
& take my fucking hand & never be afraid again”
In this line from “Our Lady of Sorrows”, I imagine the Demolition Lovers running away together, the narrator calling for his companion to face their fears bravely, trust & believe that it will all work out in the end, even as they face untimely tragedy.
Our Lady of Sorrows is another name for the Virgin Mary, often portrayed pierced with 7 swords representing the 7 great sorrows of her life. While the band plays with a lot of religious imagery stemming from a Catholic upbringing, the song has been introduced live a few times as being about “friendship & stabbing” (it was affectionately referred to as “Knives” before settling on the final title).
From a more global perspective, this line speaks to strength that comes from facing our demons together, side by side with our loved ones. When performing this live, frontman Gerard Way has introduced this song with, "You probably came with your best friend…I want you to turn to that motherfucker, grab him by the throat & say, 'You're my best fucking friend, & I would die for you!'"
Through all the blood & guts, this one taps into the beauty of friendship.
