THERE'S AN OLD BLACK TRAIN A'COMIN //
✋melted crayon x bingsu topper x leca pebble (waxy, silky, creamy, glossy, dense, chewy, slightly gritty)
👃wake-the-dead roasted coffee beans, smoked vanilla, buckwheat pancakes, tobacco, hazelnuts, shucked harvest grains
"Scraping 'long the iron
You don't need no ticket, boys
It'll take you when it's time"
We first hear this old bluegrass-folk song being sung when Wirt and Greg jump out of the way of an oncoming train, rolling down the hill into a lake, which plunges them into the Unknown. The “old black train” is an allegory for death. "While previous versions focus on the listener’s need to either reform to become one with God before death (as in the Carter Family version), or how death comes for both the rich & poor (as in the Woody Guthrie version), this version wholly focuses on both the coming of the train and the actual journey while on it." (Genius)
"Come on now, young strangers
Weren't you someone's son?
How'd you find this depot?
'Cause it ain't where you belong"
It's arguable that Wirt & Greg aren't meant to die or stay forever in the Unknown. While other residents seem to have a place & purpose there, Wirt and Greg are just...wandering, hoping to find their way home.
"You will pass a graveyard
Stones worn by the years
The train'll stop a minute
But don't let it leave you here"
The boys' end up on the other side of the garden wall after running through a graveyard to escape cops. There's a fun easter egg here -- the grave of Quincy Endicott, whom the boys meet in the Unknown, hinting that the Unknown is a sort of purgatory or afterlife.
Fun fact: At the end of every episode's intro, you can hear the black train's whistle. It gets louder every episode.
This slime is an ode to death itself & its inevitability. Though we don't know when the train will take us, we can guarantee that it will eventually come. But Wirt & Greg...they can evade it for now.
My signature melted crayon texture studded with gold bingsu & leca pebbles that crunch and tumble together like the wheels of a locomotive. Topped with train wheels and a cowboy hat for your journey.
