On their journey, the group stumbles upon the strange town of Pottsfield, where costumed people with carved-pumpkin heads are gathered for a husking bee, a traditional 18th & 19th-century community activity where (to lighten the tough labor of shucking corn), farmers invited neighbors for a communal work party with feasting, dancing & games. One person remarks to Wirt, "Say, aren't you a little too...early? It doesn't seem like you're ready to join us just yet."

They're later revealed to be the living dead: skeletons who have donned vegetables as clothing. When Enoch, the town’s leader, makes the trio work the field as punishment for disturbing the peace, their shovel strikes a buried skeleton & the group fears they're digging their own graves. But -- the skeleton is alive! He begins dancing toward the townspeople, where he is welcomed & adorned with a pumpkin head & vegetable arms.

In Jewish literature; Enoch is the name of one who ascended to heaven without actually dying, & here may represent the liminal nature of Pottsfield -- the residents are dead but also somehow alive. These "timeless spirits" are from different points in history, forgotten by the rest of the world, stuck in limbo. (Pottsfield, or "potter's field", is a place where the unknown or the poor were buried, as they could not afford marked graves.) "Their punishment is impersonal, simply a denial of moving on. They all wait eternally for "the harvest"which will never come." (u/evantheterrible)

Enoch invites the group to stay in Pottsfield, but Wirt declines & Enoch responds, “Oh well, you’ll join us someday.”
