“Summertime” is a track from MCR’s album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, a rock concept album loosely following the story of the Killjoys, a group of rebellious outsiders living in a post-apocalyptic California who battle against an evil corporation.
Summertime is one of the more intimate songs on the record, a sweet love song that might seem out of place in this universe, but it shows how even in the most difficult circumstances, humans find a way to create joy, to dream, to fall in love.
This love song, of course, has a particular end-of-the-world flavor to its romantic swoonings, as seen in:
“How long until we find our way in the dark and out of harm?
You can run away with me anytime you want”
The narrator indulges in a little “what if”, dreaming about escaping the reality of their oppressive society and running away together. I think a lot of us can relate to that.
Independent of the album’s universe, lead singer Way wrote this song about his wife who is also a musician and artist - pretty badass! I chose this title from the lyrics because I think it best encapsulates the singer’s perspective, gazing in awe upon their love, who is both broken and beautiful, a fighter who’s a little rough around the edges:
“You pick me off the ground
With a brick in hand
Your lip-gloss smile, your scraped-up knees”
Ngl, I also felt the brick line was fitting with it being pride month. IYKYK. My hope is that this song (and this slime) will connect with folks who dare to dream of softness and sweetness in this harsh world, whose existence and love is an act of resistance in itself, and who maybe wanna run away with the love of their life! (queer buds ily)
It’s a celebration of summertime with the perfect realistic hand-blended salted watermelon carrying the accord (don’t you hate when “salt” and “skin” notes are just florals? me too), and some gorgeous atmospherics that accentuate the realism of the fruits.
